The SixTasks Method

Plan your work for today and every day, then work your plan.

SixTasks is a productivity method to help you get the right things done, six tasks at a time.

This is the short version of how it works.

Steps to Follow:

  1. Set Up Lists: Create three lists: Backlog, Doing, and Ideas. You can use your favorite app or a notepad will do. Better yet, use the SixTasks app.
  2. Add Tasks: Fill the Backlog with everything you need to do. Don't worry about order or prioritizing—just add tasks as they arise.
  3. Pick Six Tasks: Each evening, choose the six most important tasks from your Backlog and move them into your Doing list.
  4. Work Through Tasks: Complete one task at a time from your Doing list. If unfinished, move it back into your Backlog.
  5. Review Daily: At the end of the day, review what you accomplished and pick your tasks for the next day.

A note about Tasks: The key is to focus on the most important tasks—those that align with your goals or vision and make a real impact. Prioritize quality over quantity to ensure you’re moving the needle where it matters most.

Add tasks to your backlog as they come up. Don’t worry about order or prioritizing—just add tasks as they arise.

If you finish your six tasks early, feel free to pull additional tasks from your Backlog. Just remember, the goal is progress, not overloading your day.

A note about Ideas: You don’t want to lose track of your great ideas. When you think of an idea, add it to your Ideas list. Later, you can review it and decide if it’s worth moving to your Backlog. Remember, ideas are just that—ideas, things you might want to do someday.

Cleaning Up: Regularly declutter your Backlog by completing tasks, setting due dates, moving items to your Ideas list, or deleting irrelevant ones.

Key Points:

  • Always stick to six tasks for the day. Less is OK, more, no.
  • Make sure the tasks you pick align with your goal or vision. Quality over quantity.
  • Review and refresh daily.
  • The method is simple, flexible, and effective once you get started.
